Best of Bruges

Updated: Nov 19, 2019

Bruges is the perfect short getaway. It's a quick hop, skip and a jump across the water, and whether you get there by train, plane or automobile, its charming streets are bound to please.

It may be small, but the choice is alarming,so instead of spending ages trying to compare what's best, here's the ones to definitely try.

Best for Breakfast

  • Books & Brunch: a second hand bookshop that serves breakfast and lunch. You can also grab a delicious waffle and wash it down with a scrumptious Harry Potter Butterbeer latte. Yes, an actual thing.

  • That's Toast: if you don't try The Smokey from this menu, you are missing out! That's Toast celebrates all things bread (plus a few others too), and they have a selection of sweet and savoury to choose from. There is sometimes a bit of a queue, but this moves relatively quickly.

Best for Coffee

Li O Lait: The coffee choice at this little find is amazing, and enough to perk up the city explorers, or wind down those of you trying to take it easy. Just to put it into context, they have 6 different types of lattes and they're all scrummy. This is a great spot for breakfast too, with some delicious bagels.

Best for Lunch

't Minnewater: Laid back, casual and cosy, this place is perfect for a delicious Moules Frites after a long morning exploring. Both the beer and food choice here is ideal, and the location is perfect.

Best for Dinner

Pietje Pek: This place is really friendly and their menu choice is pretty varied. The wine selection here is also good, and whilst more affordable than other establishments around Bruges, the service is just as good.

Le Petit Patron: Fondue. That's all I'm goign to say.

Kok Au Vin: If you're looking for something a little varied and less carnivorous than the above two choices, give Kok Au Vin a second glance. This little creative restaurant with its quirky dishes, is definitely a date night sorta place. The menu might be small, but there's something for everyone.

When I go back to Bruges, I'm heading straight for this place.

Best for Day Drinks

Halvemaan Brewery: I'm sure this is part of your Bruges culture itinerary anyway, so to rewards yourself with all that beer making knowledge, treat yourself to one at the bar. After all, you've earned it! When you buy a ticket, you get a beer on the house anyway, but unlike so many other museum style eateries, the bar here has pretty views of the water just next door, and some comfy seats too.

The Beer Wall: A tourist watering hole, the Tasting menu is a must try. It's roughly 10 euros for four little beers (where you can choose either light, strong or mixed) as well as nibbles. It can be crowded during the day, but if you can handle the cold, the views here are bloody marvelous.

Best for Evening Drinks

De Garre: Tucked away in the midst of Bruges alleyways is one of the best bars you will go to. De Garre is low key and little rough around the edges, hidden inside a historic building. It's difficult to find so keep your eyes peeled for a little alleyway that will lead you straight to it.

Cafe Rose Red: I like to think of this bar as something for everyone. Firstly, and most importantly, they sell over 200 beer options so you're bound to find something you love. Secondly, the rose draped ceiling is perfect for those simply looking for an Instagram shot. It's a lovely, warming atmosphere that's perfect for day or night, but the scene definitely comes alive when the sun goes down.

t' Poatersgat: If you've been reading up on Bruges, you will have undoubtedly already come across this place. It's the typical go-to for any Bruges tourist, but don't let that put you off. Part of the charm here is the hidden away cellar-door entrance, the candelit interior and the amazing choise of drinks. Give it a try, even if it's one for the road.
