The Hygge Guide to Copenhagen: 2 Day Itinerary

Updated: Nov 14, 2019

Keep things cosy if you're planning to travel to this gorgeous city in the colder months. Whilst bursting with colour in the Summer, Copenhagen is best seen in all its harsh glory in the Winter. Here's a guide of how to keep your heart warm whilst exploring.

Day 1

  • Porridge: Start your morning by braving the cold and going to one of the many porridge bars in the city for a hearty indulgence. A firm favourite is GRØD - a no fuss place where you can choose up to 3 toppings for your breakfast treat.

  • Walk to Nyhavn: Copenhagen is the type of city that is best seen on foot. It doesn't have ancient ruins or overwhelming castles like so many European breaks. But, it does have a stunning little harbour, surrounded by colourful buildings.

  • Get around by boat: Once you've had a chance to look around (it's very small so make sure to stop at the lovely stalls and have a proper look around), jump on one of the many boat tours that leave here and enjoy the city from the water. The tour will last an hour and it will drop you back in exactly the same place.

  • Grab a bite in Nyhavn: Any of these pretty little places overlooking the water will give you what you need, with most of them selling Smorrebrod (open sandwiches). Feeling toasty underneath the outdoor heater and blankets draped over chairs, order a Carlsberg and relax.

  • Caffeine Kick: Copenhagen is nothing if not littered in cosy cafes. Whether you're strolling back to your hotel, to a market or to a shop, make sure you get your caffeine kick. Next Door Cafe has a terribly quirky atmosphere and excellently brewed coffee to satisfy even the most demanding coffee bean connoisseurs.

  • Tivoli: If you're here, then Tivoli is an absolute must. An incredibly atmospheric, middle of a city theme park that truly comes into its own around Christmas. Even if you're not a fan of theme parks, Tivoli will not disappoint. There are rides ranging for a slight shove to being pushed over the edge. Fast food to fine dining. Mulled wine in plastic cups to champagne in crystal flutes.

Day 2

  • Smoothie Bowl: start your second day right and filled with goodness. Make a stop at Bowl 37 for a colourful breakfast option.

  • Visit Rundetaarn: Refuelled and ready, make your way to The Round Tower for it's unique architecture, climb and most importantly, views. There are no stairs; instead walk a wide spiral all the way to the top. The same spiral that horse and carts used to use to get to the top. Why did they do this? No idea. Maybe ask when you're there and then tell me.

  • Stroll the markets: You could easily spend many hours perusing the many markets around Copenhagen. The Julemarked is great around Christmas for little trinkets, or just a bit to eat.

  • Lunch pitstop: Take a break at Paludan Bogcafe - a lovely spot for a bite to eat, whilst immersing yourself in a library. Sounds strange? It's really not, and if books aren't your thing, do it for the Gram.

  • Afternoon sightseeing: After a hearty, warming lunch at Paludan, make your way over to the Christiania area of Copenhagen for some fitting culture, art and pretty scenery.

  • Cocktail Hour: Spend your final evening with some true Danish night life. Copenhagen offers a lot of bars with some amazing cocktails, but Ruby is lovely. Delicious cocktails, perfectly served.

  • Treat Yo'self: And there's no better place to finish a Danish holiday than at HOST. You will need to book a table as this is very popular. Whilst not a place to go to on a budget, the food here is something special. Try the seven course taster menu with accompanied wine. The wine portions are massive, which is why I lack so many photos from this evening. It was a good night.

Enjoy!
